Maybe you should study how business works. There is a little thing called an "Entry Barrier" which is a product or [B]service[B] that the consumers have become accustomed to which makes it necessary for a business to partake in the production of these products or services if they expect to keep be successful in their market.
Toothpaste doesn't have to freshen breathe, but no one is going to buy it if it doesn't because it is something we come to expect from toothpaste. A.net doesn't have to update Guild Wars, give us new content, hold contests, etc. but if they don't people will stop playing the game, making the game look bad, and giving people the idea that Guild Wars is a bad game and therefore lose potential customers.
So yea legally they don't have to give us anything. But speaking from a business point of view, (which is what A.net is) yes they do have to.
PS: services is bolded because that is what updates, contests, and content are. Just thought I'd help you out.

Their priority is GW2.
Updating GW is now a side project, which in all fairness is good. They know people will bitch about lack of updates and timelines being moved etc but they also know GW has a hardcore dedicated following. So, it's safe to assume that while people will rage/quit etc they will return for GW2 out of sheer curiosity.
They've made their cash from GW now. A few people quitting everyday over what is fairly petty reasons is of no great concern.
I wouldn't do it any differently myself.

I buy toothpaste to keep my teeth from rotting, not to have minty breath
I understand how Anet needs to have new content and have contests to remain popular, but how much new content/contests have we had since EoTN? Not much, and the game is still stronger than others out there *cough Warhammer Online cough*
The point I'm trying to make is that forums can only do so much for the game. Sure, we can tell Anet what skills are broken and OP, and they might decide to change them. But telling a company how they should run their buisness that's moved on to bigger and beter things is just like trying to herd cats, it's fun to watch but nothing ever gets done.

Yes, it's a given and not one player wants the priority to be anything but GW2.

Hey, I'm one of them. 4+ years and over 10k hours logged. I really do appreciate all the contests, events and such that goes on...and that they create new ones. That's never been my complaint.

To take that approach of a business model is setting yourself up for failure. In this economy and the competition to have the game that people want to buy/play, yet allowing customer attrition to occur over a few "petty reasons", is ridiculous and suicidal for any type of business. Word of mouth is one of the largest, if not the largest, reasons for customer loyalty and new business. A few leave but also convince others to leave. It's a snowball effect.

Ah, but you forget one thing, your business with Anet has long been concluded as has mine. We can play for free until the day they shut down ther servers and currently, given economy and all that, thats a pretty powerful argument.
Also, its a great game for people who dont have the time to grind toons to lv 80 and, correct me if I'm wrong, judging from posts on guru we seem to be getting quite a few WoW defectors lately.
If anyone asks me about GW then I always tell them to get it because the game is fun and has great value for money, even without extra additions.
Look at Aion, 50 euro's for the standard edition plus monthly fees? I can afford it but, quite frankly, I feel the pricing is a rip off.
GW still sells new copies as well, yes the price has dropped but still, a sale is a sale and a game thats 4 years old and still selling has some serious cred imho. People leave all the time, its been going on for 3 years and dont forget that while the english speaking districts are declining (in EU anyway), the other language districts seem to be thriving.

This pretty much sums up why their business model is still successful to this day, years after the release of the last expansion.

The business model has worked so far, however from a gamer standpoint, it leaves things like real updates to be desired. So it's fine if you quickly play through all the games once and then stop playing but not so great if you keep playing.

True, unless you count other chapters/expansions, additional accounts and/or any extras sold at the GW store.

Agreed. For a one time investment per chapter, no monthly fees is one of the attractions I play and keep playing. It's why I don't play WoW, Aion, etc. even though I can afford the monthly costs.

I haven't been in Euro/Int'l in a long time but have noticed an increase of Euro guilds.
Aww, Razon's post referring to gaming addiction was deleted. I really took no offense to his/her assumption but he/she failed to notice I said 10k hours "logged" and not "played". Half the time was afk on the rings, 2 chars for LDoA and/or just plain afk. That makes it an average of 3.4 hours "played" per day, at best. That's a hobby, not an addiction, imo. Being semi-retired in my early 40's and lots of time on my hands, I could play 10, even 20 hours a day...then I'd call myself addicted.
Anyway, Oct 1st ~ 20 winners, gl to all.
